Yein Lee’s practice revolves around a system of becoming, procedural redefinition, and the structure of connectivity. Through the reuse of discarded objects as part of an installation, sculpture, painting, and performance, the assemblage format serves to capture personal experience and narrative, while also manifesting a contradictory attitude towards materials in the context of social and environmental crisis. Her works navigate the ambivalence surrounding contemporary commodity culture, the economy, and the political dynamics. As transient compositions, fluctuating roughness and fragility are at the forefront of her formal investigation.
Yein Lee (born in 1988, lives and works in Vienna, AT) earned a B.F.A. in Traditional Asian Painting from Hongik University (Seoul, KR), before continuing her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Vienna, AT), where she received a Magister artium. Her work was recently presented at the 15th Gwangju Biennale (KR), the Schinkel Pavilion (Berlin, DE), Belvedere 21 and Kunstraum Niederösterreich (Vienna, AT), Centre d’Art La Meute (Lausanne, CH), Château – Centre d’Art Contemporain de la Ville d’Aubenas (Aubenas, FR), the Centre Culturel Suisse (Paris, FR), the Exhibit Museum (Vienna, AT), and Palazzo San Giuseppe (Polignano a Mare, IT), among others.
