Jordy Kerwick’s figurative vocabulary is, without a doubt, a pretext for painting. His brightly colored compositions, almost entirely devoid of perspective, capture both wholly imagined subjects and more autobiographical ones, often brought together on the same canvas. He also revisits classical themes in painting, notably still lifes and vanitas. Into these, he incorporates everyday elements with opposing connotations, such as flowers and cigarettes, thus juxtaposing the seductive and dull aspects of life.
His immediately recognizable iconography is based on a set of recurring graphic elements, almost like motifs, including cobras, wolf heads, feathers, nude women, and vegetal elements. Predatory animals are increasingly present in his recent works, as if to remind humankind of its primitive nature.
His works are held in the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain), the Blanca and Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection (Madrid, Spain), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Miami, FL, USA), the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art (Rizhao, Shandong, China), Fulton Ryder (New York, NY, USA), the Yusaku Maezawa Contemporary Art Foundation (Tokyo, Japan), the Bunker Art Foundation (Miami, FL, USA), the Maki Collection (Tokyo, Japan), and Colección Solo (Madrid, Spain).
